Learn how to safely descale your espresso machine using Cafetto Renew descaler packs. Follow these step-by-step instructions to remove scale and maintain performance.

Quick answer

Use Cafetto Renew descaler packs to safely remove mineral scale from your espresso machine. Follow the product label and your machine's manual for best results.

Why descaling matters

Mineral scale from hard water can clog your machine's internal pipes and heating element, reducing water flow and temperature stability. Regular descaling extends equipment life and ensures consistent espresso quality.

What you need

Cafetto Renew Descaler comes in six 25g packs, each enough for one descaling cycle. You'll also need a container to catch the solution and fresh water for rinsing.

Steps to descale your espresso machine

  1. Prepare the machine: Empty the water tank and remove any coffee grounds or used pucks. Ensure the machine is turned off and cool. Never descale a hot machine; thermal shock can crack internal parts.
  2. Mix the descaling solution: Fill the water tank with the amount of water specified in your machine's manual. Dissolve one 25g pack of Cafetto Renew Descaler into the water and stir until fully dissolved. Use only the recommended water volume; too much or too little can affect descaling effectiveness.
  3. Run the descaling cycle: Turn on the machine and start the descaling program if available, or run hot water through the group head and steam wand until the tank is empty. Follow your machine's instructions for the cycle duration. If your machine doesn't have a descaling program, run several short cycles of water through the group head and steam wand.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Refill the water tank with fresh water and run at least two full tanks through the machine to remove any residual descaler. Taste the water from the group head to ensure it's free of chemical taste. Incomplete rinsing can leave a sour taste in your next espresso; always flush until the water is clear and neutral.
  5. Repeat if necessary: If you see scale deposits in the drip tray or on the group head after rinsing, repeat the descaling process. Otherwise, your machine is ready for use. Heavy scale buildup may require a second descaling cycle—don't skip this check.
