Learn how to clean your espresso machine grouphead using the Espazzola Grouphead Cleaning Tool. Step-by-step instructions for daily maintenance.
Quick answer
Use the Espazzola Grouphead Cleaning Tool to flush coffee oils and residue from your espresso machine grouphead in under a minute, without removing the shower screen.
Why a dedicated grouphead tool works better than a brush
A standard grouphead brush scrubs the surface but can't reach the shower screen holes or the area above the gasket. The Espazzola tool locks into the grouphead like a portafilter, using the machine's own hot water and pressure to flush debris from inside the grouphead assembly.
Because the silicone brush insert is heated by the water flow, it helps loosen baked-on oils without abrasive scrubbing. The tool is also top-rack dishwasher safe, making cleanup simple.
How to clean your grouphead with the Espazzola tool
- 1. Prepare the machine: Turn on your espresso machine and let it reach full operating temperature. Flush the grouphead briefly to warm it up and clear loose grounds. A cold machine won't clean effectively — always start with a fully heated grouphead.
- 2. Insert the Espazzola tool: Remove the portafilter and insert the Espazzola tool into the grouphead as you would a portafilter. Twist the handle to lock it in place. Make sure the handle is fully engaged to avoid hot water spraying out.
- 3. Run the cleaning cycle: Press the brew button or engage the grouphead lever to run hot water through the tool for 10–15 seconds. The silicone brush will agitate and flush residue from the shower screen and gasket area. Don't run longer than 20 seconds — prolonged flow can overheat the brush and waste water.
- 4. Remove and rinse the tool: Unlock and remove the Espazzola tool. Rinse it under running water or place it on the top rack of your dishwasher for deeper cleaning. Rinse immediately after use to prevent coffee oils from drying onto the silicone.
- 5. Flush the grouphead again: Run a short flush (3–5 seconds) without any tool attached to clear any loosened debris from the grouphead. Skip this step and residue can end up in your next shot.
